Justin Roseberry’s July 22 POA Meeting Recap Pinewood Derby — Saturday, September 12: Erin is running this year's derby. The start time and the pre-derby prep day are still being finalized. Watch the Facebook group and the next newsletter for details. The prep day is a good option for kids who'd like a hand building, weighing, and checking their car. If you plan to race, now is the time to start thinking about your build. We're working on getting a fresh batch of kits in; if you're reusing last year's car, that works too.
Cook-off: chili and soup: After a few years of soup-only, the board agreed to open it back up. Bring whatever you'd like to enter. This offers more variety, and it suits the season.
Halloween party: The board is planning one this year, but the date isn't set. We're checking the town's Trunk or Treat schedule so that the two events don't collide, and we're leaning toward earlier in October for better weather. Ideas on the table include a costume contest, a photo backdrop, games, and a bring-a-dish gathering before trick-or-treating. If you have thoughts, we'd like to hear them before the next meeting.
Holiday Lights Decorating Contest: Same format as last year: opt in, we photograph the displays, photos go up in the Facebook group, and residents vote online. Dates will be announced well ahead of time. This is just your early notice if you're planning to add to your display this year.
Trees: A reminder to keep branches trimmed back over sidewalks and walkways. A good rule of thumb is that a parent should be able to walk with a child on their shoulders without hitting anything. Branches often sag lower than you'd think after a rain. The board is putting together a mailing with tree care information, an arborist referral, and the current approved tree list for anyone who needs to replace a tree. Note that replacements need to come from the approved list, and any exception needs board approval first.
Garden beds: The pollinator beds planted by volunteers in May were damaged by an herbicide application in June. The board is taking it up with the landscaping company and is pursuing the cost of replacement plants. We're sorry to everyone who put in the work on those beds — we'll get them replanted.
Fourth of July: Roughly 140 neighbors came out, and the parade with the police and fire departments was a hit. The food service ran well behind schedule, which we know soured the evening for a lot of you. That one's on the caterer, and it's factoring into how we book vendors going forward. Thank you for your patience.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 PINEWOOD DERBY WORKSHOP & PRACTICEWhere: Matt & Erin Childress’ house at 1141 Daniels Court
Attend this workshop at Matt & Erin Childress’ house to get help creating a derby car for race day. If you are using a car that’s not from the provided kits, the car may not fit on the track and a test run is recommended.

The Village derby car making rules: Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the kit only. Total car width is not to exceed 3 inches. Axle width cannot be modified. Weights may be added. Diameter of wheels may not be changed. Weight not to exceed 8 oz.* No loose parts. Axles may be lubricated with silicone or graphite.
*Note: Once your car is built from the kit, you can embellish it with stickers, gems, and so forth; however, it must not exceed the 8-ounce weight limit.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 2026 PINEWOOD DERBYWhat: Pinewood Derby
When: Saturday, September 12th at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Matt & Erin Childress’ house at 1141 Daniels Court
Race Night:
5:30 p.m.: Register, weigh-in, and practice 6:00 p.m.: People’s Choice Races are immediately following People’s Choice voting. Sloppy joes, chips, are beverages will be provided.
Prizes will be awarded for Fastest Car and Best in Show for kids. There are two categories: Kids and Adults. Adults will receive bragging rights. All ages may enter. Everyone is welcome!
Prizes for kids are for Best in Show, 1st place, and 2nd place.
You may use a derby car that you already have. Google “PinewoodDerby Car” for building tips.

There’s a costume contest for the kids, the Chili & Soup Cook-Off, s’mores at the fire pit, and movies in the park make a come back.
4:15 p.m.: Register for the costume contest. 4:30 p.m.: Start voting on costumes (1st, 2nd, & 3rd). 4:45 p.m.: Register for the cook-off. 5:00 p.m.: Cook-off tasting starts along with s'mores at the fire pit courtesy of Brittany Drogos. 5:30 p.m.: Complete the cook-off voting. 5:45 p.m.: Announce the cook-off winner. 6:00 p.m.: Set up the movie in the park. 6:30 p.m.: At sunset the show starts: “Garfield's Halloween” and then “It's the Great Pumpkin.”
