Good day, neighbors,
Summer is in full swing and our neighborhood greenery is loving it. However, a few of our sidewalk-facing tree branches have gotten a bit too comfortable and are currently hanging low enough to require a game of limbo or a quick duck to avoid a face full of leaves.
To keep our sidewalks safe and accessible for everyone out walking, jogging, or pushing strollers — please take a quick look at your front yard trees. As a friendly reminder, the Village Design Code states: Landscaping - page 12 n. Landscape materials, including street trees, shall be maintained to not encroach on the public space, including sidewalks & the public street. i. Tree branches, including leaves, shall be no less than 7’-0” above the sidewalk.
Need advice about how to tackle those branches? Sean from The Tree Bee Arborists will be at our next POA meeting on July 22nd with advice on how to keep our trees looking beautiful. — Thanks! Justin Roseberry’s June 23 POA Meeting Recap Upcoming Events Bounce into Summer — Friday, June 26 (noon to 5:45 p.m.): It's confirmed and all the vendors are locked in! A quick heads-up: kids need a signed waiver to use the bounce houses. You can sign up in advance (just message Angel) or sign up at the event — either way your child gets a wristband once it's done. Want to help set up? Come by the playground between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
4th of July Picnic — Friday, July 3: The parade lines up at 5:45 and rolls at 6 p.m., heading down Burns Boulevard, over to Chesterfield, and back around to the playground where the picnic is set up. Police and fire have confirmed they'll lead the parade (no fireworks this year). Food is tacos and build-your-own burrito bowls with sides like mac and cheese and Mexican street corn — plenty of options for different diets. Traditions is providing water and drink mixes; please bring a dessert to share. If the power hookup isn't ready in time, we have a Plan B to move things to Triangle Park.

Trees & Yards: After the recent storms, there are a lot of stressed and damaged trees around the area. To help, Sean from Tree Bee Arborist in Portage is coming to the July 22 meeting — free of charge — to answer your tree questions and share tips on keeping trees healthy and catching problems early. He plans to come back in the fall to talk about the right tree types for the neighborhood.
A couple of friendly reminders: Please keep branches over sidewalks trimmed up to about 7 feet (think “a parent walking with a kid on their shoulders”), and keep trees and shrubs clear of the stop signs so they stay visible — the one at Burns/Bollinger by the playground is a spot to watch.
Around the Neighborhood: Park benches are getting some love: We're working out the best way to repaint all ten (one's already been freshened up for free), likely a few at a time to keep it easy on the budget. Fire hydrants: We've reached out to Indiana American Water about repainting the older hydrants. They'll come assess them; expect a uniform color with color-coded tops based on water pressure. Poison hemlock was spotted in the alley behind Harbor Way and is being dealt with by the landscaping crew. Please clean up litter and pet waste at Playground Park, and Triangle Park — it's been piling up, and a little pickup goes a long way.
Alleys & Drainage: We heard from neighbors in the alley about torn-up sprinklers, tight turns for the trash trucks, and water pooling on the pavement. The board is bringing these concerns to the town's Street Department to look for real fixes. If your sprinkler heads near the alley keep getting clipped, you're not alone — we're tracking it.
Dogs & Leashes: A reminder to please leash and supervise pets in the common areas — a neighbor shared a frustrating off-leash encounter at the park. We're double-checking the current Burns Harbor leash rules and will share what we find.
Welcome, New Neighbors! A warm welcome to Deanna and Brenda — glad to have you with us. (And yes, that's a real strawberry patch in the little decorative bike out front of Brenda’s home on Harbor Way — she says pick a ripe one if you spot it!)
